Romantic Sunset Portraits | Why and How
Just like shooting at golden hour, romantic sunset portraits are quickly becoming a thing every photographer yearns for. Brides and grooms long for those picture perfect moments of bliss together. But what’s the deal behind the sunset portraits?
Romantic Sunset Portraits offer Beautiful Light
First the thing I think of when someone suggests romantic sunset portraits is the gorgeous light that’s available. While late fall and early winter tend to give us grey skys that lack sunset, the summers around her never disappoint. Light filters past the many mountain ranges, and varies from beautiful blue-pink skies to deep orange and reds. It’s impossible to know for sure what you’ll get on your wedding day, but the results are sure to please.
Ultimate romance
If you haven’t watched a romantic comedy or straight romance movie in a while, this is your chance to live one instead. Even the cover of The Princess Bride features a couple in a sunset setting. Allow yourself to simply get lost in your new spouse while the sun sets behind you. Kiss, snuggle, and canoodle to your heart’s content. This is also a perfect romantic moment to exchange gifts or handwritten letters. The possibilities are endless.
Quick break from the hustle of the reception
Receptions can move quickly and it’s really easy to get lost in the hustle. Taking a quick break to just enjoy each other allows you some breathing room away from all those distant relatives. Grab a small plate of snacks to share, or even a drink before heading out. While sunset portraits won’t take long, they will be the best few moments of your reception.
When do we schedule romantic sunset portraits?
The best time to sneak away for romantic sunset portraits is about 45 minutes before the sun officially sets. This is what a lot of photographers refer to as the golden hour, but it’s more of a pink hour if you ask me. During the summer, this start time can range anywhere from 8:30 to 9:15. In the spring and fall, start times tend to be around 7:30-7:45.
How long do we need??
In all honesty? Twenty-five to thirty minutes, but no more than forty-five minutes. This isn’t a full session and shouldn’t take a huge chunk of time. Shooting romantic sunset portraits with me, you’ll likely face your partner, kiss, spin or get spun around, dip and kiss again. How long this takes is all dependent on your wishes. I can knock it out in twenty-five minutes, or we can make it last a whole forty-five.
How do we pick the perfect spot??
Easy peasy. You trust me to do it. I love finding that perfect spot, and sometimes it’s not the most obvious place. While anywhere overlooking water will do, there have been times where the best place for gorgeous light is smack in the middle of a field or the venue. You simply have to let me know you want romantic sunset portraits and I’ll find the perfect place for them!
