How to Tip your Vendors

Inside Scoop: Associate Photographers Aren’t Our Preference

The wedding industry has changed a lot in the 14 years we’ve been wedding photographers. Many businesses are expanding and hiring associate photographers. They seem to love serving all clients, promising lower prices and package deals. But here’s why we resist the trend and what it means for your wedding day:

Associate Photographers: A No-Go except in emergencies

We aren’t just another vendor: We’re your wedding day besties

We treasure forging deep, personal connections with our couples. We understand that your wedding day isn’t just an event – it’s a pivotal moment in your love story, filled with emotions, dreams, and cherished memories. That’s why we strive to go beyond the role of a traditional vendor.

Picture this: as you step into the whirlwind of your wedding day, you’re not just greeted by photographers, but by friends who genuinely care about you and your happiness. We aim to create an atmosphere where you feel completely at ease, where laughter flows freely, and where every moment is captured with genuine warmth and authenticity.

With us, it’s not about simply documenting the day; it’s about becoming part of your journey, your support system, and your trusted confidants. We’re here to share in your joy, wipe away happy tears, and ensure that every precious moment is immortalized in stunning imagery that reflects the true essence of your love story.

Associate Photographers: Aligning Personalities

When it comes to associate photographers, the lack of pre-wedding meetings can create a disconnect. Picture this scenario: you’re entrusting your precious moments to someone you’ve never met, someone who may not fully understand your vision or vibe. It’s like dancing with a stranger on your wedding day – uncomfortable and unfamiliar.

Having consistent photographers ensures continuity, allowing us to capture your love story authentically, from engagement to “I do.” No awkward introductions, no unexpected surprises – just pure, unfiltered emotion preserved in timeless photographs.

I (Markie) just plain hate missing your Wedding Day

I’ve always been clear that I show up regardless of circumstances. I’ve had clients who book early in the year, then ended up 38 weeks pregnant at their wedding or with a newborn in tow (as young as 6 days old). It’s just not on my heart to miss your special day no matter what is happening in my life. I’ve only missed TWO weddings in my 14-year career.

Rachel + Mario’s Five2Five Vow Renewal 2022

This was the first wedding I missed and it definitely wasn’t planned. Emi woke up around 1 am on Thursday morning with Norovirus after helping with the preschool group at VBS that week, and I fell ill around 4 am. Thankfully our home is set up, so we quarantined the sickies in the Master Suite and everyone else stayed healthy. But when Emi and I ended up in the ER, I knew I wouldn’t be able to photograph Rachel + Mario’s Vow Renewal.

While seated in the ER, I frantically reached out to our network of photographers. By the time we left the emergency room, I’d had two photographers come forward and state they could photograph the event with Jake. I booked Cody immediately and sent her fee as soon as I was back in bed. (Venmo for the no-contact win). I messaged Rachel and luck me she’s a nurse, so she was super chill about the whole thing.

Cody and Jake showed up as planned. The venue had no idea we’d needed to replace a photographer at the last minute, but they were thrilled to have us (or part of us) there. Not a single issue arose while I was able to stay in bed and cure the migraine that arrived from being dehydrated. It was not an experience I would like to repeat, but I am forever thankful Cody was there to step in!

Amanda + Mitchell’s Five Sisters Farm Wedding 2022

This wedding was the second one I missed, and the ONLY wedding I ever planned on missing. I’d been booked for another wedding, but when Mitchell learned Jake was also a wedding photographer (they graduated together), he insisted we find a way to allow them to book our company. After communicating the situation with our other couple, we decided to hire an associate and go two different directions.

Unfortunately, the wedding I was scheduled to photograph was postponed due to illness, but because I was already out of town for it, we moved forward with our wonderful photographer friend, Sophia. The entire day, I was checking in and probably really annoyed Jake and Sophia. They did a wonderful job but I was a wreck and really wanted to be there.

Limitations of Associate Photographers: Inflexible Service Offerings

When opting for an associate photographer, you’re faced with limitations in service offerings, often unable to customize your experience to match your unique vision. Unlike booking directly with the business owner, where adjustments are flexible and tailored to your needs, the rigidity of associate contracts can leave you feeling restricted on your special day.

Imagine the disappointment of realizing that your associate photographer is unable to extend their time as your celebration continues into the night. It’s moments like these that can turn what should be a joyous occasion into a source of frustration and regret.

In the End: We Reserve Associate Photographers as The Backup Plan

Experience taught us the value of trying new things, but associate photographers weren’t our first choice. While they suit some, we reserve them for emergencies. Your big day deserves our best, not a casual fix.

With us, you’re not just another client – you’re part of our family. We’re dedicated to providing you with the peace of mind and reassurance you deserve, so you can focus on creating memories that will last a lifetime.
