A Cozy In-Home Newborn Session | Welcome Darcie
Welcome to Darcie’s In-home Newborn Session
Few things in life are as precious as welcoming a new baby into the world, and when it’s your own niece, the joy is even sweeter. This past summer, my brother and sister-in-law welcomed their third daughter, Darcie, into their family, and I had the absolute honor of capturing her first days in an in-home lifestyle newborn session. If you remember their maternity session (you know, the one that turned into a full-on paint party), you won’t be surprised that this session was just as heartfelt—just with a little less mess!

The Beauty of In-Home Newborn Sessions
I love in-home newborn sessions for so many reasons, but mostly because they are deeply personal. These sessions take place in the space where your baby will grow up, where countless late-night feedings and first giggles will happen. Unlike a studio session, there’s no rush to get out the door, no unfamiliar setting, and no stress if your little one needs to be fed or changed mid-session.
For Darcie’s session, we kept things relaxed, capturing a mix of posed and lifestyle images. She had those perfect little newborn stretches, the tiniest fingers curling around her mama’s hand, and a sleepy expression that melted all of us. The Wheeler home, filled with the energy of her older siblings, made the perfect backdrop for this season of life—chaotic, cozy, and full of love.
Creating a Gallery That Tells a Story
When planning a newborn session, I always encourage families to think about how they want to use their images. Whether it’s designing an album, creating a birth announcement, or printing large canvases for the walls, having a mix of portraits ensures a beautiful variety.
For example, if you’re considering a gallery wall of three large canvases, I recommend capturing:
- A solo image of the baby, swaddled and peaceful.
- A loving portrait of parents gazing at their newborn.
- A full family shot, showcasing the joy (and real-life chaos) of life with a newborn.
With the Wheelers, we made sure to include plenty of sibling moments, too. Big sisters were eager to help, and their gentle snuggles and soft kisses made for some of the sweetest images. Even their pup made an appearance, because let’s be honest, pets are part of the family too!

Tips for Planning Your Own In-Home Newborn Session
Thinking about booking your own in-home newborn session? Here are some tips to make the experience stress-free and full of love:
- Keep It Simple – Your home doesn’t have to be spotless! A little decluttering in the areas we’ll be shooting (like the living room, nursery, or bedroom) is all you need.
- Choose Soft, Neutral Tones – Light, neutral colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby. Think whites, creams, and pastels for a timeless look.
- Plan for Natural Light – I always recommend scheduling sessions in the late morning or early afternoon when natural light is at its best. Open those curtains and let the light pour in!
- Don’t Stress About the Baby’s Schedule – Newborns run the show, and that’s totally okay! Whether they’re awake, asleep, or needing a feeding break, we’ll capture the beauty of these early days as they unfold.
- Make It Personal – Incorporate sentimental items like a special blanket, a handmade onesie, or a nursery detail that holds meaning. These small touches make your photos uniquely yours.
Capturing Darcie’s newborn session in the heart of their home was such a privilege. It was a reminder that the most beautiful moments aren’t just the posed ones, but the ones where love, connection, and real life shine through. If you’re expecting and want a newborn session that tells your family’s story, I’d love to chat!
